Abstract

This work relates the experience about a brief musictherapeutic process on a 20-year old male patient, diagnosed with a moderate mental disability. This process was carried out during the undergraduate training period at the Escola de Música e Artes Cênicas (EMAC) of the Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG). There has been a total of nine weekly sessions, of forty-five minutes each. The techniques used included musical improvisation and recreation. In the first section, the patient denied visual contact and his musical expression came down to a single rhythmic unit. He also had difficulty in picking up instruments and songs. The therapeutics goals were the improvement of self-esteem and autonomy. At the end of the process, he has improved his musical expression, especially in the expansion of melodic and rhythmic elements, and self-expression, which reflect on his daily routine, and eventually on a public appearance. Describing this event provided the team the opportunity to see the results music therapy can bring to the patient’s life, helping the gain of subjectivity and thus the importance of music on the context of clinical practice of music therapy.
