the aim of this review is to provide an evidence-based synthesis of the research literature on music intervention, done by music therapists and by professionals from other health areas, for people in low awareness states (LAS), that includes vegetative state (VS), minimally conscious state (MCS), and coma. A systematic review of the literature was conducted and showed that music has potential to establish a positive contact with a person in LAS helping the reduction of inertia, agitation and anxiety, increasing responsiveness in vital signs and facial expressions, stimulating eye opening and extremity movements, and evoking activity in the auditory cortex.
