Abstract

The Health Community Agents (HCA) of the Family Health Program (FHP) of Favela Monte Azul (Monte Azul Shantytown), São Paulo, are in charge of the community’s professional care. Their bonds with the families involve an intricate relationship that goes beyond the professional dimension. On the one hand, they get great pleasure from being a HCA; on the other, they feel overwhelmed by the amount of demands, with stress being a common complaint among them. This study aims at understanding the dynamics of the HCA work, as well as the reasons why they manifest stress. It has also the specific objective of discussing how music therapy could contribute as a therapeutic and intervention tool in such environment. The group that became our object of investigation was composed of seven women between 22 and 45 years. A qualitative approach, associated with the field research–action from a methodological perspective, has been put into practice. The HCA were unanimous in recognizing how much music therapy has helped them and wished the work had continued. This points to a very important issue, that is, the caregiver needs care, and music therapy can indeed be a tool in the promotion, prevention and recovery of communities’ health.
