A research involving music therapy and maternal breast-feeding was carried out in the Maternity-School of the UFRJ in 2002, entitled “Project MAME - Musicoterapia no aleitamento materno exclusivo”, with mothers of premature babies born with weight equal or less than 1750Kg. During 16 months a daily pre-testing of the methodology model of the research was made. From observations made during this pre-testing, it was perceived that the lullabies (songs sing to sleep) occupied a significant place in this specific clinic. The effectiveness of the use of the lullabies for aid of the mother-baby bond and the installation of the maternal function (of basic importance for the good mental structure and subjective of the new to be) places the music therapists as a prevention agent of mental health. The work aims to show the importance of rescuing the lullabies as a tool of work for music therapists as well as the inclusion of this professional as a member of the medical team in this area.
