Brazilian Journal of Music Therapy (BRJMT)

 

The Brazilian Journal of Music Therapy is a biannual journal of the União Brasileira das Associações de Musicoterapia (UBAM), operating under a continuous submission model. It is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal using blind review, with no submission or publication fees, dedicated to the scientific dissemination of original works, including articles previously deposited as preprints, in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

Submitted manuscripts must relate to music therapy and fall into one of the following categories: theoretical studies and essays, research-based articles, interviews, reflective professional practice reports in Music Therapy, methodological articles, translated publications, and book reviews.

We therefore invite professional music therapists, researchers, undergraduate research students, and students enrolled in postgraduate specialisation (Lato Sensu) and Master’s or Doctoral (Stricto Sensu) programmes to submit their manuscripts to BRJMT in accordance with this Continuous Call for Papers.

Editorial Policy

The BRJMT editorial policy defines its mission, submission categories, and editorial guidelines, alongside its policies on open access, plagiarism detection, content licensing, and article processing charges (APCs). Dedicated sections on the website provide detailed information regarding the Ethics Statement for authors, reviewers, and editors, COPE copyright standards, and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy for authors, editors, and reviewers.

Mission 

The Brazilian Journal of Music Therapy (BRJMT) / Revista de Musicoterapia da UBAM is a scientific journal operating under an open-access policy with no Article Processing Charges (APCs). By disseminating scientific works, it seeks to contribute to advancements in music therapy research, theory, and practice through a double-blind peer-review process. Its mission is to disseminate music therapy studies to support academic, scientific, and clinical activity in the pursuit of understanding music-based interventions. Consequently, it is dedicated to publishing all types of results from reflective professional practice as well as quantitative, qualitative, historical, philosophical, theoretical, technological, and musical research, considering the discipline, the profession, and themes related to music therapy research. Our endeavour is to ensure the broad dissemination of reflective practice reports, theoretical and methodological studies, and clinical approaches, providing space for critical investigation and opportunities for dialogue among music therapy researchers, educators, and practitioners.

Submission Categories Accepted:

  • Theoretical studies and Essays: These manuscripts explicitly present a research problem and provide a well-grounded theoretical analysis, leading to theoretical and/or practical contributions to the field. Submissions in this category must be structured as follows: Introduction, Development, and Final Considerations. Manuscripts should be between 6,000 and 9,000 words.
  • Research-based Articles: This category includes manuscripts based on original research (linked to postgraduate research programmes — Lato Sensu or Stricto Sensu — or conducted by independent researchers or professors), involving investigations based on empirical data using established research methodologies. Manuscripts must include the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (which may be presented together or separately), and Final Considerations. [Institutional affiliation and funding sources, where applicable, must be provided in the author registration form]. For music-based interventions, authors are encouraged to follow the Guidelines for Music-based Interventions (Robb et al., 2025). For studies involving human participants, authors must state the approval reference number from the relevant Research Ethics Committee. Technical collaborators who do not meet authorship criteria should be mentioned in the Acknowledgements section. Submissions in this category should be 6,000-9,000 words. 
  • Book reviews: A concise critical summary of a work published in print. Submissions in this category should be 1,800-2,000 words and may have up to two authors. The reviewed work must have been published within two years prior to the date of submission. The book’s theme must be directly related to the field of music therapy.
  • Interviews: Understood as conversations between two or more people aimed at exploring their lives and professional experiences. Through dialogue, these pieces seek to understand and analyse key strengths and/or weaknesses regarding a specific topic. Interviews may be conducted with authors, researchers, editors, and/or music therapy practitioners whose work or the themes addressed are relevant, directly or indirectly, to the field of music therapy. Submissions in this category should be 5,000 - 7,000 words. The abstract must include: a brief biography of the interviewee, a contextual description of how the interview was conducted, its objective, and a conclusion.
  • Reflective professional practice reports in Music Therapy: As these reports involve aspects of clinical practice and sensitive personal data, authors must provide an Informed Consent Form, including specific authorisation for publication, signed by the participants or their legal guardians (in the case of minors or individuals lacking legal capacity). The report must be structured into four sections: Introduction, Development, Results and Discussion, and Final Considerations. Manuscripts must include clearly stated objectives and a synthesis of the results, providing evidence of data analysis and discussion. A key requirement is the relevance of the findings to professional practice and their applicability to similar contexts within music therapy. Submissions in this category should be 6,000 - 9,000 words.
  • Methodological articles: Submissions in this category must present innovative methodological approaches or discussions on quantitative and/or analytical data methods, supported by sound theoretical foundations. Manuscripts may address research design, music therapy intervention methods, the development of protocols, or assessment tools in music therapy. Submissions should be between 6,000 and 9,000 words.
  • Translated Publications: This category includes works relevant to music therapy that have previously been published in international journals or as book chapters in a language other than Portuguese and may be submitted in Brazilian Portuguese by the original author of the material. The translation must be carried out by the author(s) themselves. Formal authorisation from the original journal or publisher, where required by the original editors, must be provided, and the DOI of the original publication must be included in a footnote. Submissions must be made through the journal’s online platform and must include upload of the author registration form; this identifying information must not appear in the manuscript file itself. Evaluation criteria for this category include the relevance of the topic to music therapy and the clarity of the text in Brazilian Portuguese. Submissions in this category undergo a distinct editorial process and are reviewed by the BRJMT Editorial Board, which issues the decision to the authors. Manuscripts in this category must be between 2,000 and 9,000 words. Note: If the person submitting the proposal is not the original author of the material, formal authorisation for translation and publication signed by the original author is mandatory.

Editorial Guidelines:

Submissions to the Brazilian Journal of Music Therapy (BRJMT), whether submitted under the Continuous Call for Papers or in response to thematic calls, are first reviewed by the Editorial Board. This preliminary stage consists of an initial screening of manuscripts to verify originality (including plagiarism checks) and compliance with the editorial scope described above. Submissions that fall outside the scope of this call will be rejected.

Approved manuscripts will proceed through BRJMT’s editorial workflow, beginning with a double-blind peer-review process conducted by the journal’s panel of reviewers.

Submissions must address topics related to music therapy and make explicit contributions to the field. In interdisciplinary works, at least one of the authors must be a music therapist. Preprint submissions will undergo the same evaluation process.

Upon receiving reviewers’ comments, authors must submit, within 15 days, a letter to the editors detailing the revisions made, as well as justification for any suggestions not accepted. During the text editing stage, authors are expected to participate actively, as this phase focuses on refining the presentation of the content, and further revisions may be requested depending on the submission category.

Translation materials

For submissions in the “Translated Publications” category that have already been published in another language — whether classified as “Theoretical Studies and Essays”, “Research-based Articles”, or “Final Course Papers (Undergraduate and Lato Sensu Postgraduate Projects)” — the manuscript will be accepted subject to approval by the Editorial Board. The translation must be carried out by the author(s) themselves, with formal written authorisation from the editor of the journal in which the work was originally published, where required by that journal. A footnote must indicate that the text is a Portuguese version of an article previously published elsewhere, and the original reference must be provided in a note at the end of the text.

For the translation of unpublished material authored by a foreign music therapist, the qualified music therapist responsible for submitting the material must undertake the translation into Brazilian Portuguese. In addition, they must provide authorisation from the original author for the translation (except in the case of deceased music therapist authors). If the translated material has already been published, the submitting translator must provide permission from both the original author (except in the case of deceased authors) and the publisher of the journal or book in which it first appeared, where required by the original journal or publisher.

Final Course Papers

For final course papers from undergraduate or postgraduate specialisation (Lato Sensu) programmes, only one paper in this category will be published per issue. The paper must be supervised by a faculty member of a Music Therapy programme. If the supervisor is not a music therapist, a third author, qualified as a music therapist, must be included as co-author.

These submissions must fall under one of the following categories: “Theoretical Studies and Essays” or “Research-based Articles”.

For research involving music therapy interventions, BRJMT recommends compliance with the Guidelines for Music-based Interventions (Robb et al., 2025). 

Submission Form

The Author Information and Declaration Form is a mandatory document for all submissions. It must be completed and signed by all authors and uploaded as a supplementary file alongside the manuscript. The first name listed must be that of the person submitting the material.

Form Items:

  1. Author Details: Full names (in the order they are to be published), institutional affiliations, residential addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses. Include a brief professional biography (maximum 400 characters), a link to the Lattes Curriculum (for Brazilian authors), and an ORCID number (mandatory).
  2. Title and Subtitle: The full title and subtitle of the work (if applicable).
  3. Funding: Identification of the funding agency or sponsor of the work, where applicable.
  4. Declaration of Acceptance: A formal statement of agreement with the BRJMT editorial policy.

Manuscript Formatting and Organisation

Authors must use the official template, ensuring the manuscript aligns with the chosen submission category. The document must follow this sequence:

TITLE (centred, in bold capital letters, 12pt font, maximum of 15 words including conjunctions and prepositions, single-spaced); immediately below, the title must be provided in Portuguese and Spanish; two single spaces below provide the ABSTRACT (maximum of 200 words) and KEYWORDS (up to 4 keywords); followed by RESUMO and PALAVRAS-CHAVE (Portuguese), and RESUMEN and PALABRAS CLAVE (Spanish). The manuscript text begins on the following page. The organisation of the manuscript must comply with the submission category. The body of the text must start on the next page, typeset in Times New Roman 12pt font, with 1.5 line spacing and justified alignment. The indentation of the first line of each paragraph must be 1.25 cm from the left margin; margins must be 2.5 cm for all dimensions. MAIN SECTION HEADINGS must be typeset in bold capital letters, Times New Roman 12pt font, left-aligned; subheadings must be in bold and sentence case (not all caps); sub-subheadings must be in standard text without bold or all caps. When appropriate, numbered sections, subheadings, and sub-subheadings may be used, adding Arabic numerals left-aligned, preceding the title and separated from it by a single space. Graphic elements (figures, schemes, diagrams, charts, musical examples, tables, etc.) must be embedded in the text in JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), or GIF (.gif) format, at 300 dpi (dots per inch), with centred alignment; the table, chart, or figure number must appear above the image in bold 11pt font; the title must appear below the table, chart, or figure number in 11pt italics. Notes must appear below the chart, table, or figure in 11pt, such that the word “Note” is italicised and the rest of the text is in standard type (no italics or bold). Footnotes must be written in Calibri 10pt font, with numbering following the order of appearance. At the end of the text, the References must include only the works cited in the manuscript, listed according to the APA 7th edition reference style.

Open Access Policy 

BRJMT aligns with Open Science practices and guarantees Open Access to all its content.

Content Licensing and Copyright 

Since 2021, the BRJMT has adopted the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 licence.

Open Access Declaration 

Users are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose with proper attribution, without prior permission from the publisher or the author.

Article Processing Charges (APCs) 

BRJMT does not charge any article processing charges (APCs) or fees for accessing its content, nor does it require user registration for access.

Artificial Intelligence Use Policy

The BRJMT recommends reading and paying close attention to the content presented in the artificial intelligence use policy for this call for papers.

Copyright Statement

As a condition for submitting manuscripts to the Brazilian Journal of Music Therapy - BRJMT / Revista de Musicoterapia da UBAM, authors must agree to the following terms and accept the BRJMT editorial policy in the submission form.

The Brazilian Journal of Music Therapy (BRJMT) / Revista de Musicoterapia da UBAM is a peer-reviewed journal committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics. Accordingly, all parties involved in the publication process — including editors, the Editorial Board, reviewers, ad hoc reviewers, and authors — are expected to adhere to recognised standards of ethical conduct. These principles are guided by the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
