Abstract

About 1% of the Brazilian population is affected by two or more disabilities on the same individual. This study aimed to assess the effects of music therapy treatment on the communicative abilities of children with multiple disabilities. Method: Randomized controlled trial including 42 individuals with multiple disabilities, divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was subjected to 18 treatment sessions. The evaluation was made using the ALD scale (Assessment of Language Development). Results: The SES calculated - for comparison between the experimental and the control group - from the change in scores of the two time periods was 1.02 (95% CI 0.36 to 1.64, P=0.001) for comprehensive language and a SES calculated at 1.49 (95% CI 0.78 to 2.14, P <0.001) for expressive language; these are considered as moderate effect values for biomedical studies. Conclusion: The study has demonstrated a positive therapeutic effect of music therapy treatment for this population.
